Ms. Nelly's News

Please note "Ms. Nelly" is a fictional character, inspired by the best of our grandmothers and other respected older women who have poured into our lives.

How are you, honey? I gotta tell you, what they’ve been saying on the news has me wrought up with all kinds of feelings. Seems like every day we march a few steps closer to a world no human can live in. Thank the Lord, however, that's not the whole story.

After all, there have been so many sweet stories of folks coming together to support one another in times of need. Did you see the one about that football player who rescued someone from a fire? Goodness gracious, what courage! People like that remind me of the importance of compassion and empathy in our world. It's not just what we say (although our words hold enormous power), but in how we treat each other in tough times.

Of course, my heart’s been troubled by what I’ve seen when hearing the news, too. Seems like the ugliness and war just don’t quit, but instead get meaner and more frightening. For me, they serve as a stark reminder of the brokenness and suffering that still exist. As I process the world in which we live, I remember the importance of prayer. I find myself constantly seeking God's guidance in times of uncertainty.

How about you? How do you see the Lord in these times? Looking out on that crazy world, I feel the Lord’s presence and guidance act as refuge. One passage that does my heart a world of good is Psalm 46:1, "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble." I cling to this promise, and find comfort in knowing that God is with us, guiding us through the storms of life. I hope you share in my belief in the importance of faith, hope, and love.

I can only imagine what it’s like to be your age these days. I hear a lot about “anxiety” and “depression.” At lunch the other day, Edna told me her grandson's roommate talked about taking his own life! It broke my hear that poor boy felt so hopeless. Dear one, I pray you answer these terrible feelings with strength that you borrow from the Lord. And if you or a friend ever feel like that, see a professional to get help. Your life is so precious.

Please don't forget, there's never any shame in just being who we are made to be, so long as we do as we're made to do: take our cares to the Lord. Despite the challenges we face, I am encouraged by the resilience and kindness of humanity and the steadfast love of God. As you continue to navigate the ups and downs of life, hold onto the hope that comes from knowing that God is faithful and that His love endures forever. I stay so thankful for the little things the Lord provides every day: cups of tea, healthy food, sunshine, and my sweet pups. Even the sometimes grumpy ol’ Pop. He and you are the greatest blessings the Lord’s shared with me. Ya’ll take care, be good, and stay safe. I love you. You are so special to me. I know you're busy, but when you get a minute, please write to me.
